Andre’ Gauche of Myoli Beach Lodge in Sedgefield recently attended the IBTM CHINA EXPO – 23 & 24 AUGUST, 2017 in Beijing as an exhibitor along with Sun International, The City of Tswane, The South African National Convention Bureau, Northern Cape Tourism Authority and the Durban Convention Centre .

Andre’ was part of an incentive programme organised by SA Tourism to promote incentives, business travel and general tourism packages for the Chinese market.

Andre’ summarised his experience as follows:

Assessment Summary:

  1. China is a challenging market as it’s a long-haul destination and air travel is reasonable expensive
  2. Most buyers interested in Africa, and more specifically South Africa, are still testing the market. Language is obviously a major barrier.
  3. An important component of the expo is the quality of the follow-up with the various buyers that did show an interest in the South African experience
  4. Most buyers require confirmation of the product/s offered as many have not been to South Africa
  5. It is evident that long term business relationships are important in this market. This can only realistically be achieved over a period of time with pro-active participation from both parties.
  6. Undoubtedly the Chinese market offers massive potential for incoming tourists to South Africa but a stable base needs to be established where sectors of the market are geared to receive and effectively accommodate these tourists. Sun City is a case in point where Sun International pro-actively promotes to and makes provision to accommodate this market. The Chinese market also has no shortage of well-heeled travellers who primarily aim for 4 star + accommodation establishments.
  7. Group bookings, corporate incentives, conferences and business travel are largely the norm.

Issues Arising

  1. Security. There are certain concerns over visitor security to South Africa. There is obviously considerable negative press regarding crime and personal safety issues.

2, Logistics. Flight programmes, distances and locations. Ideally a China based tour organiser/operator with knowledge of the South African market needs to work in conjunction with local operators or organisers. They need to know up-front exactly where they are going, where they are staying, what they are doing and at what cost.

  1. Language and cultural barriers. There is a definite requirement for a Chinese-speaking interpreter/guide to either accompany Chinese groups or must be made available locally.
  2. It’s a special needs market and consideration must be given to food & beverage preferences and other specific needs.

Plus factors for incoming Chinese tourists to the Southern Cape region:

  1. Wide variety of quality accommodation options at affordable rates
  2. Diverse culinary options and a wide variety of restaurants
  3. Totally unique experience with mountains, forests, ocean, lakes, rivers and Karoo environment
  4. Most adventure/leisure activities in the world
  5. Most temperate climate in Africa and malaria free
  6. Safe, clean and friendly environment with good infrastructure
  7. Close proximity to Cape Town, Port Elizabeth and Addo National Park etc

Andre’ owns  www.southcapetourism.com – a free internet portal established in 2010 to promote and market accredited accommodation establishments and adventure/leisure operators in the Southern Cape region. He also owns Myoli Beach Lodge in Sedgefield www.myolibeach.co.za

The whales have arrived in PLETT

Reports from our marine safari companies are correct; the whales have most certainly arrived in Plett. Social media is currently filled with images of whales settled in along Central Beach, Lookout and Robberg Beaches breaching, playing or simply napping along our coastline.Have a look at some of the sightings we’ve had over the past two weeks. For an unforgettable marine safari experience, book here or take a stroll along the beach and see what you can spy.

Ocean Blue Adventures’ Tilly says: “South Africa’s whale season is in full swing with numerous sighting of both southern right whales and humpback whales. It is such a delight to see these majestic animals in our waters again after their migration down to the cold polar waters in order to feed. The southern right whales will choose sheltered bays along our coastline in which to mate and calve, while the humpback whales will travel up along our coastline to their breeding grounds in the tropical waters off Mozambique and Madagascar. Keep an eye out for any blows, flukes or magnificent breaches off the coast during this time.”

This week has been busy for the staff of Knysna Tourism. While our front office staff are assisting the public with queries about accommodation for the Knysna Oyster Festival and in the longer term, our marketing team has been focussing on getting the message out to world that Knysna is open for business. In this newsletter, read the story behind our logo, #VisitKnysna #KnysnaRises, which was designed for us pro bono by local advertising creative Dominic Morel.
We have had fantastic support from Minister of Tourism Tokozile Xasa, Minister Alan Winde from the Ministry of Agriculture, Economic Development and Tourism of the Western Cape, and Sisa Ntshona CEO of South African Tourism, who will all help us to ensure that our message reaches international travel agents, tour operators and media. We are also taking advantage of the presence of local media in our town to get the message out to South Africans.

The Pick n Pay Knysna Oyster Festival is on track and one of the highlights will be The Pick n Pay Seafood Wednesday, which brings together the best Knysna has to offer in one venue. From fresh seafood to wine and beer tastings, fish braais and music, there will be something for the whole family.

There was much excitement earlier in the week when 50 Qhubeka bicycles as well as handmade blankets, scarves and beanies arrived in Knysna to assist with relief efforts following the devastating fires. Read about this wonderful initiative for our local community.

Please ensure that you complete The Business Disaster Register for Knysna residents that is being sent out by Knysna Municipality so that they can assess the amount of damage done by the fires, including job losses and total loss to the economy.

Minister Alan Winde rides the inaugural Cross Cape Cycle Route

On 12th May, an intrepid group of cyclists set off from Plett’s Main Street on the inaugural ride of the Cross Cape Cycle Route, from Plett to Stellenbosh.

Bitou Mayor, Peter Lobese, welcomed the cyclists by saying: “We are grateful for this wonderful opportunity to put our town in the spotlight. Plett is home. It is alpha & omega, you can start here, and end here.

Minister Alan Winde, who also cycled the route, said that “one of the purposes of the Cross Cape Cycle Route is to connect our small villages and grow their economy whilst allowing cyclists and adventure tourists to see different parts of our country that are off the beaten track”.

The Cross Cape Cycle Route is the first of its kind in our region and promises both locals and tourists the opportunity to use the route for transport and as a tourism route.

Slow Route #FoodJourney at Benguela Brasserie

This week’s Slow Route Food Journey takes us to Benguela Brasserie & Restaurant at Lakeside Lodge, situated on the reed-fringed banks of the Swartvlei Lake, just a few kilometres from the Slow Town of Sedgefield. The view alone sets it apart from many other restaurants in the area, but aside from that, they recognise and implement many of the slow food principles which we are seeking to promote on this culinary journey. Their mouth-watering bill of fare is inspired by the seasonality and availability of locally produced ingredients.

Nico was on duty on that right line and spent the week dialing it in and making another slightly shorter set up jump for a massive booter at the bottom.

More than thirty years ago the Japanese coined a poignant phrase to explain the sense of well- being one experiences when spending time in the heart of a forest. It’s called shinrin-yoku or “forest bathing”. Based on ancient Buddhist practises, the philosophy is quite simple: go to a forest, walk slowly, breathe and open all your senses. There is mounting scientific data on the health benefits of spending time under the canopy of a living forest. It is the best medicine for the mind, body and the soul.

Sponsor a hole at SA Senior Golf Open

This year’s SA Senior Open event in Plettenberg Bay will be the biggest prize purse the SA Senior Tour will have had since 1997, and they expect a top field to come out and compete. The Endangered Wildlife Trust (EWT) has partnered with the SA Senior Tour to create the EWT Senior Golf Series. The launch event for this series will the 2017 SA Senior Open. With the game of golf attracting people with a love for the outdoors, physical exercise and wide open spaces, the series will be the catalyst for bringing together wildlife enthusiasts around a common passion for conservation and sport.

The Bitou Municipality and Plett Tourism are very excited to welcome the EWT Senior Golf Series to Plettenberg Country Club and believe that everyone who both lives and holidays in the region will come out to support this unique event. Tourism is one of the key income generators for this region and events of this calibre help to raise awareness of our beautiful town as well as attract people to the event. It is our responsibility to protect regional resources and beauty, and the endangered Humpback Dolphin, which only occurs on this stretch of coastline, is a key part of that, which made it the obvious choice to be the benefactor of this event.

The first two days of the SA Senior will be Pro-Am format, with 72 Amateurs and 72 Senior Tour Professionals taking part, with the final two days being Pros only.

Plett property reaches R1 billion turnover

The Plettenberg Bay property market has just surpassed the magic R1bn turnover mark for the year.

Kevin Engelsman, Seeff’s licensee for the area, says that this is indeed a milestone in view of the prevailing economic climate.

The popularity of Plett just continues to rise, says Engelsman. “Aside from an influx of new residents as part of the migration to the Western Cape, we have seen a notable increase in demand for holiday and retirement accommodation in the town. Buyers and holiday makers from Gauteng areas such as Johannesburg and Pretoria are especially keen right now.”

No child should go to school without shoes

It’s school time, and that means uniforms, books … and school shoes. The sad fact is many of our children in Plettenberg Bay are in need of school shoes. Remember “No child must go to school without school shoes” and you can make a difference!

You can buy a pair of shoes at any Pep Stores and support Siyasanga Vandala‘s initiative, or you can deposit R89.00 in the Plett Tourism account – marked “Shoes” – and we will assist Mr Vandala to buy school shoes and distribute them to the needy school kids.

Get in touch with Siyasanga on Facebook or through Plett Tourism 044 533 4065.

Seasons in the Sun

Plett’s eclectic experiences offer fun, year round

The Plett tourism experience continues to evolve into an excitingly eclectic mix – and our seasonal themes will help distill our offering for our visitors!

And yet despite the continued investment in tourism experiences in recent times, there remain significant opportunities and challenges which are now being tackled, principally in heritage and culture tourism and in the development of sustainable tourism opportunities in previously disadvantaged areas, and for previously disadvantaged businesses and individuals.

We’ve packed Plett into four fun-filled seasons – Summer, Adventure & Nature, Culture & Heritage and Wine & Food.

The experiences capture the very best Plett has to offer – and they’ll help address past legacies and build the “One Plett Economy” which Plett Tourism is committed to.

The Lookout Deck Restaurant is a legend in its own right.

Nestled between the Lookout Rocks and the Lookout Nature Reserve and perched overlooking the incredible Blue Flag Lookout Beach, this is possibly one of the most unique locations on the planet! A must visit in Plett for breakfasts, lunches, light snacks and dinner.

From sunrise to sunset and the stunning rise of the full moon, take in the Indian Ocean. Reach out and touch the dolphins as they mingle with surfers. The cooking is fresh, simple and jolly good value – the quality service is always served with a laugh or two.

The diverse menu, extensive wine list and choice of exotic cocktails and full bar service is epic and caters for every palette.

“Great location, good food and service real value for money. We have had a number of treats here and we will be back again and again. The view is great the service is well organised and helpful. There is a wide choice and everything comes out superbly presented. We have been here for lunch and dinner both a success.”

Handmade in Sedgefield, South Africa

Nikki Jones is passionate about Sedgefield. She is also a keen crafter who devotes much of her free time to sewing, knitting or crocheting a wide range of unique items from children’s soft toys to sewing accessory bags. She first started crafting when she was still living in her native Zimbabwe. After the birth of her twins she decided to become a stay at home mom and started crafting as a way to supplement the family’s income. It wasn’t very long before she had a thriving home industry and at one point she had seven women working for her.

The influx of visitors during the festive season puts even further pressure on our strained water reserves.

THIRD ANNUAL SASFIN PLETT WINE & BUBBLY FESTIVAL PLAYS HOST TO MORE THAN 1 500 FESTIVAL GOERS ON CENTRAL BEACH

Bitou Mayor, Peter Lobese, opened the 2016 Sasfin Plett Wine & Bubbly Festival with a crowd-pleasing “sabrage” alongside Plett Cellar Master Anton Smal. Bubbly of choice was a signature Newstead Vineyards MCC.

Event organizer Plett Tourism announced an estimate of more than 1 500 attendees who celebrated the Plett Winelands at this year’s festival. This was almost double to the 2015 figures. 10 wine farms showcased their wines, with more than 30 varieties to be sampled. There was even a new addition from That Place Vineyard. With only 560 bottles of Pinot Noir in production for 2015, they joined forces with neighbor Bramon to allow festival-goers an opportunity to sample the fruits of their labour.

Other wine highlights from this year’s festival included the official launch of Lodestone Wine & Olives’ Méthode Cap Classique Rosé, “Stonechat” (named after the stonechat bird that sits on the vines), and Bitou Vineyards’ 2015 and 2016 Sauvignon Blanc. Both wines were extremely well-received by invited media guests and wine aficionados who were in attendance. This year also saw the introduction of the Wine Legends Theatre, with presentations by well-known wine columnist PeeBee Bishop and local Cellar Master Anton Smal.

See you next October for the fourth Sasfin Plett Wine & Bubbly Festival!

Gorgeous Goukamma – Paradise on our door

It was a fresh, early October morning and I was on a mission – to capture through the lens and best paint a picture with words, the beauty of the Goukamma Nature Reserve and Marine Protected Area. So there I was, standing on the blissfully deserted Goukamma beach, during a spring-low tide, staring out at the big blue as it collided with the shoreline.
