Slow Route #FoodJourney at Benguela Brasserie

This week’s Slow Route Food Journey takes us to Benguela Brasserie & Restaurant at Lakeside Lodge, situated on the reed-fringed banks of the Swartvlei Lake, just a few kilometres from the Slow Town of Sedgefield. The view alone sets it apart from many other restaurants in the area, but aside from that, they recognise and implement many of the slow food principles which we are seeking to promote on this culinary journey. Their mouth-watering bill of fare is inspired by the seasonality and availability of locally produced ingredients.

It’s called shinrin-yoku or “forest bathing”. Based on ancient Buddhist practises, the philosophy is quite simple: go to a forest, walk slowly, breathe and open all your senses. There is mounting scientific data on the health benefits of spending time under the canopy of a living forest. It is the best medicine for the mind, body and the soul.

Sponsor a hole at SA Senior Golf Open

This year’s SA Senior Open event in Plettenberg Bay will be the biggest prize purse the SA Senior Tour will have had since 1997, and they expect a top field to come out and compete. The Endangered Wildlife Trust (EWT) has partnered with the SA Senior Tour to create the EWT Senior Golf Series. The launch event for this series will the 2017 SA Senior Open. With the game of golf attracting people with a love for the outdoors, physical exercise and wide open spaces, the series will be the catalyst for bringing together wildlife enthusiasts around a common passion for conservation and sport.

The Bitou Municipality and Plett Tourism are very excited to welcome the EWT Senior Golf Series to Plettenberg Country Club and believe that everyone who both lives and holidays in the region will come out to support this unique event. Tourism is one of the key income generators for this region and events of this calibre help to raise awareness of our beautiful town as well as attract people to the event. It is our responsibility to protect regional resources and beauty, and the endangered Humpback Dolphin, which only occurs on this stretch of coastline, is a key part of that, which made it the obvious choice to be the benefactor of this event.

The first two days of the SA Senior will be Pro-Am format, with 72 Amateurs and 72 Senior Tour Professionals taking part, with the final two days being Pros only.

Plett property reaches R1 billion turnover

The Plettenberg Bay property market has just surpassed the magic R1bn turnover mark for the year.

Kevin Engelsman, Seeff’s licensee for the area, says that this is indeed a milestone in view of the prevailing economic climate.

The popularity of Plett just continues to rise, says Engelsman. “Aside from an influx of new residents as part of the migration to the Western Cape, we have seen a notable increase in demand for holiday and retirement accommodation in the town. Buyers and holiday makers from Gauteng areas such as Johannesburg and Pretoria are especially keen right now.”

No child should go to school without shoes

It’s school time, and that means uniforms, books … and school shoes. The sad fact is many of our children in Plettenberg Bay are in need of school shoes. Remember “No child must go to school without school shoes” and you can make a difference!

You can buy a pair of shoes at any Pep Stores and support Siyasanga Vandala‘s initiative, or you can deposit R89.00 in the Plett Tourism account – marked “Shoes” – and we will assist Mr Vandala to buy school shoes and distribute them to the needy school kids.

Get in touch with Siyasanga on Facebook or through Plett Tourism 044 533 4065.

Seasons in the Sun

Plett’s eclectic experiences offer fun, year round

The Plett tourism experience continues to evolve into an excitingly eclectic mix – and our seasonal themes will help distill our offering for our visitors!

And yet despite the continued investment in tourism experiences in recent times, there remain significant opportunities and challenges which are now being tackled, principally in heritage and culture tourism and in the development of sustainable tourism opportunities in previously disadvantaged areas, and for previously disadvantaged businesses and individuals.

We’ve packed Plett into four fun-filled seasons – Summer, Adventure & Nature, Culture & Heritage and Wine & Food.

The experiences capture the very best Plett has to offer – and they’ll help address past legacies and build the “One Plett Economy” which Plett Tourism is committed to.

The Lookout Deck Restaurant is a legend in its own right.

Nestled between the Lookout Rocks and the Lookout Nature Reserve and perched overlooking the incredible Blue Flag Lookout Beach, this is possibly one of the most unique locations on the planet! A must visit in Plett for breakfasts, lunches, light snacks and dinner.

From sunrise to sunset and the stunning rise of the full moon, take in the Indian Ocean. Reach out and touch the dolphins as they mingle with surfers. The cooking is fresh, simple and jolly good value – the quality service is always served with a laugh or two.

The diverse menu, extensive wine list and choice of exotic cocktails and full bar service is epic and caters for every palette.

“Great location, good food and service real value for money. We have had a number of treats here and we will be back again and again. The view is great the service is well organised and helpful. Handmade in Sedgefield, South Africa

Nikki Jones is passionate about Sedgefield. She is also a keen crafter who devotes much of her free time to sewing, knitting or crocheting a wide range of unique items from children’s soft toys to sewing accessory bags. She first started crafting when she was still living in her native Zimbabwe. After the birth of her twins she decided to become a stay at home mom and started crafting as a way to supplement the family’s income. It wasn’t very long before she had a thriving home industry and at one point she had seven women working for her.

Precious Drops

There is a huge appeal to both residents and visitors of the Greater Knysna area to remain mindful about their water usage this season. For some time now we have been experiencing hot weather coupled with very low rainfall throughout the region and beyond and thus water restrictions are currently in place and will continue while there is pressure on the water grid. The influx of visitors during the festive season puts even further pressure on our strained water reserves.

THIRD ANNUAL SASFIN PLETT WINE & BUBBLY FESTIVAL PLAYS HOST TO MORE THAN 1 500 FESTIVAL GOERS ON CENTRAL BEACH

Bitou Mayor, Peter Lobese, opened the 2016 Sasfin Plett Wine & Bubbly Festival with a crowd-pleasing “sabrage” alongside Plett Cellar Master Anton Smal. Bubbly of choice was a signature Newstead Vineyards MCC.

Event organizer Plett Tourism announced an estimate of more than 1 500 attendees who celebrated the Plett Winelands at this year’s festival. This was almost double to the 2015 figures. 10 wine farms showcased their wines, with more than 30 varieties to be sampled. There was even a new addition from That Place Vineyard. With only 560 bottles of Pinot Noir in production for 2015, they joined forces with neighbor Bramon to allow festival-goers an opportunity to sample the fruits of their labour.

Other wine highlights from this year’s festival included the official launch of Lodestone Wine & Olives’ Méthode Cap Classique Rosé, “Stonechat” (named after the stonechat bird that sits on the vines), and Bitou Vineyards’ 2015 and 2016 Sauvignon Blanc. Both wines were extremely well-received by invited media guests and wine aficionados who were in attendance. This year also saw the introduction of the Wine Legends Theatre, with presentations by well-known wine columnist PeeBee Bishop and local Cellar Master Anton Smal.

See you next October for the fourth Sasfin Plett Wine & Bubbly Festival!

Get into the Festival Spirit this Spring!
Friday, 12 August 2016

Written by Lisa Leslie

We are edging our way towards the end of winter and have much to look forward to over the warmer months ahead – with not one, but three popular festivals scheduled to take place in Knysna over the next few months. Not only are festivals important local economic drivers but they also play an important role in strengthening community spirit. Most of these festivals also have fund raising initiatives in place which benefit countless local charities. So be sure to mark your calendars for these fantastic events!!

Knysna Arts Festival
Knysna has long been known as a town with a thriving creative community – boasting incredible talent across multiple artistic genres. This 9-day arty affair takes place from the 1-9 October 2016, and is once again being hosted by Sotheby’s International Realty. This festival serves not only as a fantastic platform for local artists to showcase their talents but is also a way for funds to be generated in support of several worthy beneficiaries.
“We have appointed a larger team of organisers for the 2016 event to ensure that we can seamlessly grow the Knysna Arts Festival into a major destination event without it losing its Knysna flavour or independence” commented Sotheby’s International Realty principal, Peter Mare. “The underlying philosophy of this event is to stimulate locally produced art whilst also supporting the greater Knysna community”, he concluded.
The 2016 festival will be concentrated around a central ‘Art Hub’ at the Woodmill Walk which will be the dynamic centre of activity, with workshops, art exhibitions and several performance arts offerings including theatre, cabaret, dance and live music.

Leisure Island Festival
The Leisure Isle Festival is a feel-good annual event organised by the community – for the community. It takes place in Kingsway Park, Leisure Island on the 5 & 6 November 2016. It aims to provide local crafters and businesses a unique opportunity to showcase and sell their products, promote community spirit, and provide a venue for approved charities to raise funds.
A wide number of local businesses, organisations and individuals support this much loved local initiative. “It truly is a case of locals supporting the needs of the local community”, states the official website.
This festival is an ideal family event, with a host of activities geared towards children.

The Knysna Timber Festival
Our town is deeply rooted in timber and the Knysna Timber Festival, which takes place at the Timber Village on Welbedacht Lane from the 11 – 13 November 2016, is a fitting celebration of our heritage and is paving the way for the reawakening of Knysna’s multifaceted timber culture.
The festival presents local wood crafters and master cabinet-makers with an opportunity to showcase their expertise, while also serving as an ideal platform for various businesses and brands to market their products and services. The festival is geared towards professionals in the field as well as hobbyists, DIY enthusiasts and the general public. It even caters for the little ones.
Day One: A workshop event with interesting presentations by industry professionals.
Day Two: Will feature TV personalities, DIY workshops, Timber Games, a Timber Trail Run and Kids Zone.
Day Three: Focuses on the outdoors, exquisite kitchens and timber related literature.

The harvest has just finished, but the members are already collecting accolades and releasing new wines! The 2016 harvest would be remembered for record tonnage at some cellars, good quality grapes, fruity white wines and red wines with intense colour.

Two Top 100 SA Wines from De Krans

Two wines from the De Krans portfolio have been included in the list of wines for the 2016 Top 100 SA Wines. The wines securing a spot on the sought after list are the De Krans Touriga Nacional 2014 and De Krans Cape Vintage Reserve 2013.

The De Krans Touriga Nacional 2014 is produced from grapes grown on the farm and aged in French oak barrels for 12 months. A deep dark colour the port displays intense fruit flavours of blackberries, violets and spice.

Produced from several Portuguese varieties, and aged in oak for 22 months before bottling, the De Krans Cape Vintage Reserve 2013, according to winemaker Louis van der Riet will reach its optimal drinking potential if left to age for a further 20 to 30 years. A port described as being a dark deep red, Louis feels it shows a beautiful aromatic nose of violets, red berries, vanilla and dark chocolate. On the palate you’ll be met with alluring red fruits, dried prunes and cocoa flavours.

Boplaas released the Ouma Cloete Straw Wine 2015 to celebrate their history

Carel Nel owner/cellar master’s grandmother Nettie Cloete was related to the famous Cloete family that made world class sweet wines in the late 1700’s in Constantia. After feloksera destroyed the Constantia vineyards, some family members travelled inland and ended up in Calitzdorp.

The 2015 Ouma Cloete Straw wine was made from Muscadel (the same grapes that was used in Constantia) and Viognier by pinching the stem, sending the sugar content up to 40°B. After fermentation on the skins for 24 hours it was pressed for another 24 hours. Less than 400 liters per ton was yielded from the raisined grapes.

The wine has a lovely golden colour with flavour of honey, litchi, Muscat, tropical fruits, apricot and orange peel. It has a good acidity with a rich, lingering luscious finish and is ideal to serve with desserts and cheese.

This beautiful wine is packaged in a 500ml bottle and sells for R110.00 per bottle from the two Boplaas tasting rooms in Calitzdorp and Little Brak River. For more information visit www.boplaas.co.za

De Krans released their first Pinotage Rose

What comes to mind when you think of De Krans ports and wines? Quality would no doubt be one of them and you can be assured that the latest offering from this award-winning producer will deliver just that. Wine aficionados can treat their taste buds to the maiden vintage De Krans Pinotage Rosé 2016.

The wine is made from 100% Pinotage grapes grown at De Krans. These grapes are only used for the Rosé and are picked earlier than the other varietals to ensure optimal freshness and a lower alcohol of just 12.5%. The very short period of skin contact has resulted in a wine, which can best be described as being a beautiful light salmon pink colour. Winemaker, Louis van der Riet says the wine displays fresh flavours of strawberries, ripe cherries and raspberries, with a whisper of watermelon. On the palate the wine is perfectly balanced and dry, with a mouth-watering fresh acidity.

Expect to pay no more than R59 per bottle for this great value wine. For more information visit www.dekrans.co.za

Pergola vineyard triumphs in Klein Karoo

A unique Colombard vineyard that was trained on a pergola trellis system, was announced as the winner of the VinPro/Winetech Vineyard Block Competition in the Klein Karoo region. The competition is held annually in the respective regions to identify, celebrate and share the best viticultural practices.

The regional competition focused on alternative plant widths, trellis and pruning systems this year. “Due to economic realities more and more wine producers are investigating more efficient systems to reduce input costs and obtain higher yields and better quality,” said Johannes Mellet, VinPro’s viticulturist in the Klein Karoo region.

The winning block of Joos Nel on the farm Rose Villa near Calitzdorp is Colombard, clone CO2 on Richter 99, trained on a pergola. The runners up were Nico Fourie from Herold Wines in Herold, with a block Pinot Noir on a double guyot system, and Dereck Calitz from Onrust near Calitzdorp with a Colombard vineyard on a mechanical pruning system.

According to Johannes, the pergola is not commonly used for wine grape cultivation in the Western Cape. However, it has various benefits that are not apparent at first sight. The trellis system enhances the cordon length per hectare and therefore also the yield. Labour is more productive under the cooler trellis and the supervision and harvesting is easier. Organic material improves and root distribution is better in the cool soil below the trellis. The pergola is also more cost-efficient in terms of establishment cost (1.5 m cordon width with 3 m row width), mechanisation and fuel. Less actions are needed in the vineyard and there is a decrease in the amount of man hours per action. Canopy and pesticide management is also more cost-efficient in this vineyard.
