Written by  Lisa Leslie

On the 18th February at Pelican Lodge in Sedgefield, Knysna & Partners entered into the first round of discussions with several business and possible stakeholders about the proposed development of a Slow Tourism Route, which will integrate with the Sedgefield Slow Town concept. The fact that Sedgefield is already established as the Slow Town of Africa, lends itself perfectly to the establishment of a route of this nature.

We are fortunate to live in an area blessed with not only natural beauty, but a host of destinations which operate according to the Slow Town/ Slow Food ethos.
Our objectives:
• To develop a local Tourism Route which will cluster rural entrepreneurs into a collective entity that makes them more attractive to the market, whilst pooling their resources and experience.
• Train local route coordinators to support the route management structure (Route Forum) and participating entrepreneurs.
• To transform the route forums into sustainable social enterprises that can market and support route participating enterprises at the relevant marketing platforms.
• To undertake capacity building and mentorship of the Route forums, and participating SMME’s, to increase their success rate and the number of people they employ.
• To promote trade to the participating entrepreneurs by erecting route signage to direct travellers, and this to be assisted through media exposure and online marketing.
• The project has a strong capacity building component that aims to equip rural entrepreneurs with the required skills to maximize opportunities that are developed through increased market access.
The route hopes to include the following practices/establishments:
• Local food producing farms and community food gardens.
• Agri-experiences and activities.
• Farm-stays and Home-stays.
• Slow Food ventures and traditional restaurants.
• Accommodation establishments within scenic environments.
• Wine Farms

Ultimately it is expected that the route will include Plettenberg Bay, Knysna, Sedgefield, Karatara, Rheenendal, Wilderness Lake Area, extending to the rural regions of George. The route will consist of 10 clusters, of which the Sedgefield – Knysna Cluster will be the first to be developed.

JB Furniture Manufacturers – #KnysnaMade

When one walks through the 1300m² factory of JB Furniture Manufacturers (formerly JB Woodworking) in Knysna’s Industrial Area, it is immediately clear that owners Kimberley Snook and Russel Burland are running a very slick operation. The airy workspace is impeccably well-organised; from the neat stacks of raw timber planks near the entrance, right through to the final wrapped product, it is quite evidently a seamless operation.

Artist breathes new life into driftwood – #KnysnaMade

Before he even started creating sculptures from driftwood, he had a penchant for collecting it. Then one day he came across the portfolio of a driftwood artist from abroad and in that instant he knew that it was what he wanted to do with his life. He closed the chapter to his vocation as a chef in the hotel industry and has never looked back.

South Africas first walking festival, the Garden Route Walking Fest, takes place on the Garden Route over the Easter Weekend in 2016, offering 52 walks between George, Knysna, Plett, Natures Valley, and Storms River, the festival is poised to offer visitors and locals the opportunity to connect with the area and to explore its natural beauty at leisure.

The Cape Garden Route is arguably one of the world’s great walking destinations. It is the ideal place to host South Africa’s only walking festival, with its beautiful mountains, secret forests, cascading waterfalls, coastal cliffs, incredible beaches and famous trails.

“Walking festivals are a big trend globally, but the Garden Route Walking Fest is a first for South Africa – it’s a massive undertaking that involves the support and involvement of all the local communities. Hi-Tec, a brand which has become synonymous with hiking in South Africa, are sponsors of the event, which enables us to offer a wide range of walks catering to all levels of fitness and adventure, ”comments festival founder Galeo Saintz.

And there really are walks for everyone, from slow saunters along the beach at the end of the day, to brisk walks up some of the regions highest peaks, such as George Peak and Peak Formosa in the Tsitsikamma. The Traditional Walks include the Brown-Hooded Kingfisher Trail or Circles in the Forest Elephant Walk, and for the more intrepid, there is a Geo-Caching Walk. A collection of festive walks such as the Fancy Dress Masked Walk at sundown, or the Inner Magic walk for kids, promise great fun with friends and family.

The extensive programme also includes many unusual walks, such as the Walk with Poetry and the Yoga Walk. For those with an adventurous spirit, the Naked Walk in Nature offers the chance to experience nature au naturel. Adding to the selection is An Evening Walk through the Night Sky, presented by local astronomers, a Connecting Nature trail and a Community Walk, which will be led by a local conservation initiative.

Everyone is welcome –“The Garden Route Walking Fest festival is about building a connection between us as communities and between humanity and nature,” says Saintz.

The walks are all led by local Walk Leaders. If you are a local guide or walking enthusiast and would like to add your walk to the programme or lead an existing walk, please contact us to be included.

“Walking is one of the best ways to appreciate and discover the incredible natural beauty that makes the Garden Route a much loved destination. Join us for fun time out in nature, meet new friends and discover hidden gems off the beaten track. This festival is ideal for families and all lovers of the great outdoors,” concludes Saintz.

The festival benefits local Garden Route environmental charities and conservation initiatives by highlighting their work and facilitating donations by walkers to their causes.

Even when it rains, there are so many ways to enjoy what Knysna has to offer. Here are 10 quick things that we have dished up for you.

HIRE OR BUY A DALENE MATTHEE NOVEL

Dalene Mathee – an Afrikaans author of 13 books was best known for her four Knysna forest novels. Her final resting pace is at Krisjan-se-Nek, one of her favourite spots in the Knysna Forest. Her books are on sale at the Knysna Tourism walk-in offices in Main Road or available for hire at the newly revamped Knysna Library.

VISIT THE LOCAL LIBRARY

Knysna boasts an amazing 11 public libraries within its municipal area. The flagship library was recently revamped and visitors are invited to be inspired by the Knysna Collection hosted in a stinkwood cupboard donated to the town in 1893. A recent additional indigenous timber cupboard was donated by the Friends of the Library and Geo Parkes & Sons. Visit them at Memorial Square in Knysna Main Road.

TAKE A TRIP DOWN MEMORY LANE IN QUEEN STREET

On the corner of Main and Queen Street you will find the Old Gaol. It was the first building erected by the Colonial Government in Knysna and was built in 1859 to house convicts en route to the construction camp of the Prince Alfred Pass. Just two blocks down you will find the Millwood House, Parkes Shop, Pitt Street House and Parkes Cottage – each housing its own bit of Knysna history.

HAVE A COFFEE IN THE OLD POWER STATION

The Thesen family moved from Norway to Knysna in 1870 and founded numerous business entities in Knysna. In 1904, Charles William Thesen bought Paarden Island (now named Thesen Islands) and began processing timber on the islands in 1922. The historic power station site used for electricity on Thesen Islands, now hosts the luxurious Turbine Hotel & Spa and Island Café – built in 1939/1940.

ENJOY A LOCAL CHAT AT SOME OF KNYSNA’S HISTORICAL PUBS

Knysna hosts various historical buildings and the smallest pub is housed on the site of the original Belvidere farmhouse and a feature of the pub is the wine cellar viewed through the window in the floor, where freshly caught game would have been hung in the early days of Knysna. With a yellowwood ceiling and ironwood block floor, The Bell at Belvidere Manor is a quaint favourite.
